Eating for excellence:money-spinning myth or science-based saviour?

Updated: Jun 13, 2019

When it comes to sitting down to work, many of us reach for the biscuit tin, crack open a can of Diet Coke and settle in to graze for the afternoon, thinking that a steady flow of energy to the brain will increase our productivity. But is there something in this new fad for fats, the penchant for protein? Or is it really just about getting the nutrients we need? When I was at university, I all too often found myself seeking a quick chocolatey fix in between deadlines, or warming up a ready meal and bolting it down before orchestra. I thought that, by maximising my time, I would automatically be maximising my output. It wasn’t until I dozed off mid-rehearsal, violin on shoulder, bow on string, and woke up to the sound of myself ‘sleep-playing’ the Turangalîla symphony that I realised I wasn’t giving my body the fuel it needed to keep up with my schedule. I looked at what I was eating and realised that the crisps, the Coke and the chocolate (sigh) just weren’t going to cut it if I wanted to realise my full potential. As amusing (and faintly worrying!) as this multi-tasking was, I doubted that it would get me through my upcoming exams with the same degree of success! So I decided to revolutionise my eating habits and discovered, very quickly, that simply by being more aware of what I was putting inside my engine, I could get through my revision more efficiently.

You don't need to give up your chocolatey fix; raw cacao is full of brain-focusing magnesium!
