Looking For 11 Plus Exam Prep? Here Are 10 Things You Should Know

There is a specific kind of atmospheric pressure that descends upon a household when 11 plus exam prep officially begins. It’s subtle at first, a slightly larger pile of Amazon boxes containing practice papers, a sudden interest in the nuance of "synonyms for 'happy'," and the faint, rhythmic ticking of a kitchen timer that seems to grow louder every week.

I remember sitting in a sun-drenched library in Cambridge, surrounded by ancient leather-bound tomes, thinking that surely this was the peak of academic intensity. I was wrong. The 11 plus is its own unique beast. It’s the first time many children, and, let’s be honest, many parents, face a high-stakes "gatekeeper" exam. It’s a period filled with late-night flashcards, cold cups of Earl Grey, and the haunting silhouette of a non-verbal reasoning grid (faintly worrying, isn't it?).

As someone who has spent the last thirteen years as a "turn-around specialist", helping students leap from predicted Bs to A*s and navigating the labyrinth of entrance exams, I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen the panic, the triumphs, and the occasional meltdown over a long division problem. If you are currently standing at the foot of this particular mountain, don't worry. I’ve brought the map.

Here are 10 things you absolutely need to know about 11 plus exam prep.

1. It’s a Marathon, Not a 100-Metre Dash

One of the most common pitfalls I see is the "Year 6 Panic." Parents realize the exam is six months away and suddenly the kitchen table becomes a boot camp. (Sigh). This rarely ends well for anyone’s sanity.

The most successful students I’ve worked with started early, usually in Year 4 or early Year 5. This allows for a "little and often" approach. Twenty minutes of focused work four times a week is infinitely more effective than a four-hour marathon on a Sunday afternoon when everyone would rather be watching Great British Bake Off. You want to build the academic "engine" slowly, maximizing output without blowing a gasket.

2. Vocabulary is the Secret Fuel

If there is one thing that underpins almost every part of the 11 plus, from English comprehension to verbal reasoning, it is vocabulary. If your child doesn't know what "gregarious" or "aloof" means, they are already at a disadvantage.

I always tell my parents: feed the engine with books. And I don’t just mean the classics (though a bit of Dickens never hurt anyone). Anything that challenges them, magazines, high-quality journalism, or even sophisticated graphic novels, counts. We want to create a rich mental library they can draw from under pressure.

A stack of diverse books ranging from classic literature to modern science magazines, topped with a sleek, midnight-blue fountain pen and a small notebook titled 'My New Words'.

3. Know Your Enemy (The Exam Board)

Not all 11 plus exams are created equal. Is your target school using GL Assessment? CEM? Or perhaps their own bespoke papers? This matters, a lot.

The format, the timing, and even the types of questions vary significantly between boards. GL tends to be more transparent with its question types, while CEM is known for being "tutor-proof" (though we tutors love a challenge!). Before you spend a penny on 11 plus exam prep materials, make sure they match the specific board your child will be sitting.

4. The Magic of Online Tutoring

Gone are the days when a tutor had to trudge to your house with a heavy briefcase, usually arriving just as you were trying to cook dinner. Finding high-quality online tutoring in the UK has been a total game-changer.

In my digital classroom, we use interactive whiteboards, screen sharing, and digital resources that make the session feel like a collaboration rather than a lecture. It’s flexible, it’s engaging, and honestly, children are often much more comfortable behind a screen. It’s their natural habitat! Plus, it allows you to access specialists (like yours truly) regardless of whether you live in London, the Cotswolds, or internationally.

5. Reasoning is a Skill, Not an Instinct

Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning can feel like a series of strange logic puzzles designed by a particularly mischievous sphinx. Many children have never seen these types of questions in school.

The trick here is pattern recognition. It’s about learning the "rules of the game." Once a student understands that a "rotation" follows a specific logic or that "codes" are just simple substitutions, the fear vanishes. We transition from "I don't get this" to "Oh, I see what they're doing there!" That’s where the grade improvement really begins.

6. Don’t Neglect the "Inner Engine" (Confidence)

I’ve seen brilliant students crumble on exam day because their confidence wasn't as strong as their long division. The 11 plus is as much a test of temperament as it is of intelligence.

As a "turn-around specialist," a huge part of my job isn't just teaching grammar; it's building resilience. We celebrate the mistakes. We dissect the "wrong" answers with humor and curiosity. If a child feels like a failure every time they get a VR question wrong, they’ll stop trying. We want them to feel like an explorer solving a mystery.

7. The Mock Exam is the Dress Rehearsal

You wouldn't open a West End show without a dress rehearsal, would you? (As a Drama tutor, I take this very seriously!).

Doing practice papers at the kitchen table with a biscuit and a glass of milk is one thing. Doing them in a silent room, under a strict timer, is quite another. Mock exams help children manage the "time-pressure gremlins." They learn when to skip a question, how to breathe through a moment of panic, and how to pace themselves so they aren't rushing the final five questions.

8. Balance is the Ultimate Strategy

This might sound counter-intuitive from a tutor, but please: let them play football. Let them go to dance class. Let them stare at a wall and do absolutely nothing for an hour.

The brain needs downtime to process information. If their entire life becomes 11 plus prep, they will burn out before they even see the exam hall. I’ve found that the students who maintain their hobbies often perform better because they aren't carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders.

9. Focus on the "Gap" Areas

It is very tempting to keep practicing the things your child is already good at. It feels productive! It makes everyone feel clever! But it’s a trap.

True growth happens in the uncomfortable gaps. If they are a whiz at English but struggle with spatial reasoning, we need to lean into the spatial reasoning. My role is often to identify these "blind spots": those little areas where points are being dropped: and shore them up until they are solid.

10. You Are the Navigator, Not the Engine

Finally, a word for the parents. Your role is to be the calm navigator in the passenger seat. If you are stressed, they will be stressed.

I always provide detailed feedback after each session because I want parents to feel informed but not overwhelmed. You don't need to be an expert in a level tutors online or the intricacies of 11+ grammar: that’s what I’m here for. Your job is to provide the encouragement, the healthy snacks, and the reminder that no matter what happens on exam day, they are still brilliant.
